Good food
Near Kalyvitis, you can discover the delicious local cuisine. The little village of Koutsouras is only four kilometers away. There are several authentic tavernas where you can still enjoy traditional local dishes. In this village, you can also find a bakery, a butcher, a pharmacy and a small supermarket for your daily shoppings. The wider area counts many more tavernas, at the most beautiful locations.
The sky-blue Libyan Sea has a lot of great places to swim, relax and scuba-diving. Along the coastline, you have a large choice of different kinds of beaches and coves. If you want to experience the feeling of a desert island, you can make a boat trip to the islands of Chrissi or Koufounisi. Two exotic islands where camera and sunbathing are the rules.

Kalyvitis is a perfect starting-point for the real walking- and nature-enthusiasts. In the surroundings, you can find five gorges (Orino, Pervolakia, Pefki, Sarakino, Zakros), totally different from each other and each with its own charm. Because of the low numbers of tourism in the area and the fact that the Cretans aren't very fanatic walkers, the gorges are untouched and quiet.
Tip! Spring (April, May) is a beautiful hiking season in Crete. There is a big chance that you will walk in the mountains through a sea of flowers and be surprised with many floral scents.

You can drive endlessly through the beautiful mountains and along the sky-blue coast. This way, you discover the most incredible villages where time seems to stand still. You will be warmly welcomed by local population, and in the local "cafeneio" they still serve your drink with the most delicious mezes (little dishes).

You will be surprised how rich in history Crete is, when you visit one of the many archaeological sites. Don't miss the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, which has a treasure of history exceptionally exposed.
